Placement of objects on cabinets

I replaced my old wreath with the one I made last night. I used the same nail since it is a heavy duty one and the more I look at it it seems to low. My only dilemma is you will be able see the hole if I do raise it. Thinking possibly adding a bow that the tail hangs to hopefully cover it? Any suggestions on that or the other decor welcome-thanks

I love your kitchen. The placement of the decor on the shelves for me needs to be grouped instead of being "lined" up. The eye needs to stop somewhere.

I would raise it then group your decor items as mentioned. Maybe even layer a couple in front of the wreath on the fridge. Can you do a simple patch on the hole?

I agree you need to raise your wreath up. Can you plaster the hole and use touch up paint. Also I agree with divine interiors you need to group your items. Odd numbers grouped together works best in a casual setting. They are all beautiful pieces but they aren't reading cohesively. I love the wreath,

I just started decorating - still need to buy a few more things for up there. The walls are so high it's tough to find tall objects to fill the voids. :-) Yes the wall can be repaired- just trying to avoid pulling the fridge out. Thank you everyone I will do some rearranging with what I have so far. I wanted to raise the rooster also. Looking on line for over the cabinet decor - not a whole lot out there.

@Brenda Scott-Montero You can raise objects by putting them on books or boxes to make them look taller. You need to vary the height of your items up there. Just trying to help.:)

Why not hang some art - you have the space.

The fridge and the stove are in the wrong places, you need to switch them.

My inlaws have a setup with their French door fridge against the wall. It is extremely difficult to put anything large on the right side of the fridge (the side against the wall).

My first impression is that you have too many flowers/floral items. Stick with only the wreath and add other pieces of interest that are not flowers. And, yes, the stove would make me crazy having to cook standing up so close to a wall. I had that arrangement in an old apartment and never did get used to it. You could make your own "art" by shopping fabric stores in the "decor" fabric section. I'll bet you would find something amazing that could be stretched across a frame like a painting, then hang it on the largest expanse of your wall. You need some color and that would be an excellent way to get it for not much money.

    • @Swan Road Designs ... yeah, that stove in the kitchen would definitely not work for me. I wonder if she could swip-swap the frig and stove inexpensively.
  • I would raise the wreath, put a couple of your lovely pieces in front of it, and I would move that fantastic "M" to the corner and put a couple of pieces in front of that on either side as well.

Is the stove next to an outside wall? If so, perhaps it was located there so the exhaust fan could be vented outside?
  • Nay1205709 Nay1205709 on Feb 09, 2015
I would raise it and perhaps wrap the wreath with burlap with a big bow. You need some color in your room everything is ""white""

I think our reader asked about the wreath and the wall above the cabinets and that's where we need to focus. The stove placement would drive me nuts and probably drives her nuts as well but I suspect there's no cheap and easy fix. As mentioned, the stove may be on that wall because of venting issues. Additionally, the fridge is too tall to fit in that space without tearing out the small cabinet and it looks too wide; even if you could squeeze it in the space; you probably couldn't open the doors. With regard to real estate above the cabinets, I agree - definitely the wreath needs to be hung much higher and the items need to be sorted and grouped rather than lined up to fill the space. I'd take everything down except the wreath; move the wreath up (I'd think maybe the bottom of the wreath needs to be above the cabinet line - that leaves space above the fridge but we can deal with that later). I'd leave out the other floral arrangements as someone suggested and work with the big M (maybe hang it), the rooster (maybe better fitting over the stove) and a large colorful art piece as someone else suggested (I love the green plate and if it were my kitchen, I'd look for something with that shade). Then I'd consider what else to add to each group to create three separate vignettes before I buy anything else. Google "top of kitchen cabinet vignettes" and look for inspiration at HOUZZ and other sites. You have what appears to be a slightly quirky kitchen but it's fresh and charming.

Definitely raise your wreath, and if you don't want to do a nail filler job, the ribbon idea is great! I see your walls are green in color, and you have a green plate, so I would go with a green and cream print ribbon-will be so pretty! My mother always told me, if you have something small and short, pair it up with something taller to go behind it! Your rooster would be adorable paired with the small greenery, and your initial with the metal vase with floral. You could just leave the other cabinet tops empty. Good luck, and your kitchen is so lovely!

You have a large expanse of wall...add some artwork. And yes, raise the wreath. And switch the stove and refrigerator if possible.

The stove and refrigerator locations are still bugging me. Aside from the fact that cooking splatters, etc. will coat the wall to the right of the stove, another issue regarding light flow seems obvious to me. The refrigerator effectively stops light from reaching to its right, which would be helpful when working at the stove. Not only that, the continuous flow of light across the entire counter area would be improved. If there is any way possible, I would swap the two appliances, even if it means lifting the small cabinet over the stove to accommodate the refrigerator. Or, as long as there is disruption, go ahead and place it over the stove and let the refrigerator have circulation to allow it to run efficiently. However, three challenges come to mind. One, if the stove is gas rather than electric, running/changing a gas line could be problematic and/or a bit costly. Another is, if it is electric, it would probably require a 220 electrical outlet and may necessitate having one installed. To my knowledge, all refrigerators use 110 outlets, which shouldn't be too big an issue in most kitchens. Lastly, even though there appears to be enough width in the stove's position to allow the refrigerator to be placed there, will it still allow the right door to open as it should? Just me thinking out loud.

Hi Brenda! Quite a pretty color palette in your kitchen. I am agreeing with some of the folks above, you have too many things "lined up". But also, the balance is off because of the circle wreath over the hard line of the fridge top. I would move the wreath over to the wall where the rooster statue is, then move the tall tin pail with the flowers to the opposite side where the M is and place the rooster next to it to balance the heights. The M can go on the left wall by itself and the item with the three dark cylinders can sit on the top of the fridge. You can bring the other basket with flowers down onto the countertop to balance off the other two floral pieces. Good luck!

Also keep in mind that just because the walls are tall, it is not necessary to feel one has to fill up all that space. Like foyers with tall walls, there is no need to decorate all the way up. If the decor is attended to as suggested, the eye will "stop" following the height of the wall. Good luck....it will eventually come together. Keep at it.

I appreciate everyone's advice. Originally when we had the house built the appliances were supposed to be flipped. But I wanted a walk in pantry (right side of stove) but the fridge doors would not open properly if it were to stay there. I rearranged it a little more until I can find some books to get different levels. I will be raising the wreath. Now I only need Jo-Jo from Fixer Upper to come over and help me decorate the rest of my house. :-)
