The cabinets are built-in 50s style and are very well made. I do not want to replace them.

Yes! There is a kit you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes that will do just that very thing. Just Follow your directions and you will have a new surface after about a weekend of hard work.

Yes, but prep your cabinets completely! Don't skimp on prep or you will regret it! Clean, clean, clean, remove all the grease and grime, sand, prime with a smooth/slick surface primer and then topcoat. If you use a latex to topcoat remember it takes 30 days for a latex topcoat to cure completely, so if you have to put the cabinets back in service before then be very careful or you will mar your finish. Good luck! :)

We have just painted formica cabinets in our camper. There is a can of paint at Lowes which is tintable and only comes in quart size. It is not the kit. It goes a long ways. Perfect. It cleans up with mineral spirits. You will be thrilled with the results.
