I have 2 different granites. When we bought our house the center island had granite so I hated to rip it out when replacing the rest of the kitchen counters, so I chose a granite to coordinate withe the colors of the center island. I chose a simpler granite without much veining, actually it's black, called "Ooba Tooba", not sure of the spelling. I didnt want it to compete with the "busier" granite on the island and it turned out that this was one of the least expensive granites. My floors are multicolored slate and my cabinets are an off white maple which I plan on painting the same color, just freshen them up some. I took my stock boring center island and painted it a deep charcoal grey chalk paint, adding moldings and bun feet to make it look like a vintage furniture piece, replacing the hardware with black and cream ceramic, pricy, but worth it. I also added some medallions made of resin but painted to match the island. My house is a custom build, but being the second owner, it wasnt exactly the way I would have chosen. I wanted to make it look more "old world", without doing a complete redo. I added character by installing a copper pot rack over the island filled with copper pots and pans collected over the years. My formal dining room and breakfast room are one in the same, a large hexagon shaped room with a soaring ceiling, domed and 20' tall. I faux painted it in copper to tie it in with the kitchen. Use your imagination but keep it classic, using touches of metallic for punch, like jewelry for your room. Use your imagination, thik about a decision beforehand, don't just jump in, think about it working 5 to 10 years from now, neutral colors are best. Enjoy the process!

Starla, thanks so much for the input. My kitchen and family are one big area and would have to be painted the same wall color, trying to coordinate the island, walls and cabinets, are becoming overwhelming. I like the idea of the darker solid color of granite. I will have white shaker style cabinets, and the granite on the island is gold/brown tones. Any wall color ideas and what color to paint the island? ThanksNo search results.

It's common to have a different countertop on an island. If your island granite is busy it would be best to use a solid or nearly solid color on the rest of the counters. Since your island granite is a warm tone you can go with any pop of color that doesn't clash. What is your favorite color? Unless it's pink or purple you may be able to find a shade that will work in your room. Perhaps a soft shade of the same color could work for the wall paint.

If your current granite has alot of variation and movement in it you may want to try a more solid color that is complementary. The other alternative is a marble if you second counter will be an island or baking counter. We install duel color kitchen counter fairly often and it is becoming more common.
