Does anyone know FOR SURE , can I take hostas over the border to Ensenada? I am assuming they would do well there, not to hot not too cold, however they will be close to the ocean. The weather is the same as San Diego.

I found this. http://www.bajabound.com/before/permits/agriculture.php There is the mention of an importation process here that seems to preclude bringing plants over from one's yard. I wouldn't risk it.

@Bernice H I am not sure, Bernice. I, too, know people in Florida growing hostas, but none that I know are particularly close to the beach. The descriptions of hostas that I have seen where they are listed as moderately salt tolerant usually is in reference to winter road salt.

To my knowledge, you cannot take any flowers, fruits or vegetables over the border.

Nope....no plants, fruits or vegetables can cross the border. Look for a gardening website in your new area. I am sure they will locate and order for you.

    Not allowed in either direction!

I feel bad for you. I love my Hostas. I would surely miss their beauty if I moved!

@Kristen Rikli Isnt that the truth? I have several varieties, I just wanted to take some very small roots...and start over again! haha I could probably get away with it too. I will have to go to the hosta site, and see about shipping to another country! ha I love my hostas and they love me!

wow I love your yard, have fun re-creating it !

@Symea Thank you, I love it too. What I love about hostas, alyssum and snap dragons, they don't care who else is sharing the garden with them, they just quietly do their thing! so loyal!

There are nurseries in Ensenada so you will probably be able to get some hostas there. I had a lot of them when living in LA so they'll do fine in the climate. My biggest issues were the summer heat and snail and slug damage.

No problem. The hostas you will find there will not need freezing temps so don't worry about that. I had a bunch of them and they did great. Since you'll be near the ocean you'll find many beautiful perennials you could never keep healthy in Yakima. Have fun exploring new plant varieties. Salvias in many colors, sea grasses, cacti, bougainvillea, Cape Plumbago, Lily of the Nile, and many other drought tolerant plants will look beautiful in your new landscape. It will be a whole new gardening world! You should consider getting an online subscription to Sunset magazine for design inspiration. 😊

NO! You cannot take plants, fruits or vegetables in either direction over the border. Some states also prevent you from bringing plants, fruits and vegetables between states too to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

@Jill wow...I don't know who to believe because all the Americans and Mexicans bring loads of foodstuff from CA to MX, even fruits and vegetables. I know going through state checkpoints,ie into CA , homegrown fruits and vegetables and can't be transported over lines, but store bought packaged stuff can. I may be mistaken, but we just did it a few days ago.

I know you can't or are not supposed to take anything across border to Canada so I imagine it would be the same for Mexico.

Interesting question??? I have families who live in Mexicali and cross over to Calexico and do some major shopping at Walmart...Need to ask them if they purchase fruits and vegetables and are allowed to cross with those purchases...The last time I was there, I did notice the packaged mixed greens from WM....now I'm curious

@Douglas Hunt I agree....thanks I remember the thread of horror plants, one of which the Houttynia plant I have ...and have almost eradicated in my garden! However I am not a real fan of cacti.....hmm

I live in N. Texas and I have Hostas. It gets hot here but also cold. I was told by the person where I order my hostas that they need at least 30 days of freezing weather. We usually get at least that in winter. Going into my second year with them. We shall see.I also know that you can't take them across the border.

@Kittykatz2001 What i am also wondering if ocean spray will bother them. I can probably order some, but ocean air I am curious about. Ensenada doesn't get very cold at all. @Douglas Hunt What do you think?
