I bought this jewelry box second hand. I think it needs a makeover but I can't get the pulls off of it. Lol Any ideas from all you genius ladies on what I should do with it? Paint? Stain?

  • ...depends on your own preference , as far as paint or stain. My personal choice is paint, as one has such a wide variety of looks and choices. :) You didnt say why you cannot get the hardware off....?

I must not have a small enough screwdriver. The little one that I have looks like it fits but its not working. I may have to buy another one.

@Shelby @ The Weathered Barn Studio Agree! Bought a few boxes of mini screw driver sets for stocking stuffers one year, and one for myself. So handy.

The grain is a bit strange, so I would paint it.

Looks like a good solid oak piece. Nice.
  • ..The thing about oak....its either something you like, or you dont ....but a lot of its ' dated'. and enjoyed a great popularity during certain eras." Old "oak is a bit different, and will hold a better finish, when taken care of properly.

@Kristi Chittam I have a jewelry cabinet like that and I'm going to use chalk paint on mine with antique wax. I use Maisson Blanche vintage furniture paint.

It looks like its in great shape. If you don't like the color I'd sand, then paint it.

I've been having some fun with jewelry boxes lately. I prefer an elegant painted style. The hardware can be a problem. They are usually attached with tiny little nails. I remove mine by lifting up gently with a little screw driver, saving the nails for reattaching. They pull right up. I have used Rub 'n Buff to change the color of the hardware. There are several colors available.

I have picked up a couple of these and turned them into sewing boxes. They look so nice refinished and setting by my favorite chair. No one knows but me.

Instead of fully painting it, why don't you try stencilling it first. A lot of stores here are doing this trend at the moment. Or you can use tape and tape a pattern on to it then paint between tape. Use chalk paint. Pull off tape when dry.
