Carey on Sep 14, 2016When we raised chickens, we had a chicken house and yard for them. We sold eggs when I was a kid and often our chickens were also pets. They still had a useful life and provided the meat that we needed as well. A farmers fact of life. Then you get the city folks and they don't want to hear the chickens, chortling, clucking or Crowing. Complaints follow. That means the farmer finds a way to house the chickens to stop the complaints, and increase the production, thus chickens are then housed in warrenouses. Over the years I have seen this happen. The city folks come up with laws for the farmer to have to obey to continue selling their produce. For instance, We had cows and sold milk for years. Then they passed a law that you had to wash down the barn with hot water. It sounds good to the city guy, but in practice, hot water causes the bacteria to grow and put the smaller farmer out of business. My Mom ended up having to pour her milk out on the ground because of these kind of laws and until that happened, our barnyard never was stinky. Afterward, it was horrid and drew flies which was gross too. So Mom lost her business, still had to milk the cows, dumped the milk that she couldn't use and sold those cows. Until then we had all the milk we could drink, butter we needed, meat that we needed, cottage cheese that she made added to a garden that most people can't even imagine. What a waste! She was an amazing woman!
