How to make the mantel over fireplace flush with the wall?

The mantel is above an outdated 25-35 year old fireplace, (typical brown brick I'd like to change as cheaply as possible). I'm renting, FYI. But the mantel is not flush with the wall. Its driving me crazy. I'm not good at repairs, etc., and I'm all I've got! Please help.
