If you want the boards to actually measure 2" x 8", you will have to have them custom milled. A 2 x 8 in standard dimensional lumber is actually 1-1/2" x 7-1/2".

It is NOT as hard as you might think...well, if you have tools. We went to a saw mill in La. and bought a bunch of lumber and just started building. The only hard part was joining the boards together. The hardest part is getting the two straight edges between boards straight enough to glue. A lot of "builders" these days aren't as concerned about it as I was, which is ok with me. Perfection? Nope! Beauty is not always "perfect". Our table is almost 9 feet long, 28 inchs wide, made from two pine boards with a western red cedar in between....Sweetie Pie loves it.....that ALL that matters. The base....well, there's the problem area for me. SOOOOOO many different choices make my little mind wander and want to redo the one we have!!! yep, it'll happen! I'm trying to post a pic......

Thank you all. I now have a plan in mind and will proceed as soon as we get moved. We are a family of 7, starting completely from scratch.and very little money, so I think building our table will be the best and cheapest solution. We need everything from beds to pots and pans.

El Esposo builds rustic farm doors for our house with 10" pine tounge-in-grove planks that were originally intended for flooring. He's also done it with a horse stall we had (tounge & grove) because we removed the stall to make room on the barn for his truck.

The tounge in grove aspect helps hold it together,
