Long living room wall---Help!

Stephanie
by Stephanie
We just moved in, and we are at a loss as to what to do with this long living room wall. Disregard the ugly computer set-up on a drafting table for right now, but a computer armoire is on wish list.
If it helps, on the other side of this is a recliner, a couch and a rocking chair, in a semi-circle with the couch up against the wall. Coffee table in front of that. (Boring, huh??)!
What would you do on the wall? We have one print, 30x36" size (http://www.wikiart.org/en/grant-wood/stone-city-iowa-1930) which is what we are steering toward for a color scheme.

Think of that wall as a canvas. I love large wall space. What will make you smile when you look at it? What is your overall theme? The art you are putting up is kind of a traditional farm piece. I think I would work around that piece. I would place that pic in the middle of the wall then start piecing other things in. These are examples of things I would put up if I were going for the country farm house look.

Stephanie, just wanted to tell you that wayfair has some really cute country computer cabinets. I didn't know if you were the "thrift store" type, like I am.

I would pick up some cheap bookshelves then put crown molding around the tops & bottoms to make them look like built ins leaving space for a TV or your computer armoire in between Something like this maybe. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/living-room-ideas-shelves-faux-built-in-4205168

@Stephanie If you type built in bookshelves in the search here you'll find lots of different ideals! Good luck with your project & be sure to post pics when you finish! :)

First---the color of the wall is extremely muted. It does not look like you have crown molding, either...??? Depending on the color and style of your furniture, I'd definitely add a bit of color---even if it is a taupe type.....anything to bring a little life in the room. Next: the TV stand that you are showing us is a stand for a smaller room/wall size. It is too small for that size area---looks lost. It is not going to give you that "home-y" feel. Budget: depending on your budget....that's going to be the solution! 😀😀😀 If your plans are to buy an armoires for your computer area, why don't you consider buying a corner unit for that right hand corner area.... I'd get a larger sized one with a decorative top area to give some style to that wall...instead of a dry, cold look... OR: Get you the "double" set---the computer armoire with the matching TV armoirse. A big double unit would really look nice, standing together... To "soften" the look in that room, on each side of the armoire/tv case, I'd add something. On one side, you can have a nice medium height plant. On the other side, a nice big basket with your blanket throws, etc.. Anything to "soften" those wooden furniture corners!!! Then after you have those items placed, you can add pictures ( of medium size ) on both sides... On top of armoires, you can use that area to put something to soften the room also. NOT FAKE VINES, etc, please !!! Lol !!! If you collect things, consider something of that nature to add to that wall... It all comes down to budget! I have a very similar wall--LONG! I have the Ethan Allen 3 tall entertainment unit sections, together---the center section is for the TV...the left unit are book shelves, the right unit stores the music/cd's items.... On each side of my huge entertainment area, I still have room for more things! On the left side, I have a wing back recliner (with a crock pot end table between it and the unit). Then on the right side of the units, I have a real big deep basket with all our blanket throws... We just take from the basket and we all throw back in there when we finish using! Hope this helps !!! Bottom line-- your TV stand is just way too small for that room! That is for a small apt style living room or small, spare bedroom..

Thank you for your ideas! I'm now on the hunt for an entertainment unit with a matching computer armoire. So many good ideas---will definitely use the large basket with throws, too!

Not sure if this is your style or something you would consider...I will throw it out there for you to decide. What about industrial pipe & wood shelves? You can customized the stain or paint of the pipes or shelves. You can move the shelves to any size you need or want. You can customize the the height, width, & depth of each shelf. You can leave spaces open for things like artwork or the TV.

Paint a different color, wallpaper it, use mirrors or picture frames in various sizes.

There are many examples on this site, just look at the pictures. Consider your style and look at your interests and hobbies. Do you collect something? Example, sports, collectibles or family photos. Build a large picture frame and put something into the center.

Remember to work in sets or groupings of uneven numbers.

Have fun! Check out the secondhand stores for objects, too.
