In rental units the high gloss paint is wearing in spots.

Stencilling usually involves paint and if you have permission to use paint, then I don't know why not. It will probably hold better on the worn spots than the shiny stuff.

yes, @Linda Peraino - painting over the worn spots should be a breeze with stencils, the hard part will be making sure all dirt and oils are removed - my suggestion would be plain ole white vinegar, (if you heat it slightly in the microwave, it works a little better) - using 0000 (superfine) steel wool and a rag and wipe over the "to be painted spots" - you may need a bit of regular ole fashioned paint remover or mineral spirits to remove tough spots, but must be careful not to remove your cabinets base paint - unless you want to that is....(you could take ALL THE PAINT AND GRIME off with these products and make the worn spots focal points - you know sorta frame those spots with either a heart, star or another shape the corresponds with your kitchen and put your selected stencil inside the shape) - once you have stenciled and allowed the paint to dry for 48 full hours, add 1-2 coats of clear acrylic sealer - you can choose satin, matte or gloss - gloss might be interesting - making the stencils pop in a shiny sorta way - oh the possibilities of painting painted cabinets! (I find the clear sealer adheres and remains better when you allow the paint sufficient drying time - and keeps the colors truer.)

REMEMBER IT IS JUST PAINT - can always be re-painted! Oh and if you don't want all that work, check out some of the CONTACT paper options - clean area, cut out the shape and size and cover those worn spots!

If it's very worn you'll want to make sure that you lightly sand the surface as well. Sanding once, filling the spot, sanding lightly again, and painting the entire cabinet will make it better than new!

if your landlord is cool with it go for it...but I love the contact paper suggestion...I have use those new "Contact" 3M brand strips to hang pictures, I used them to stain a piece of veneer and hung it in the panel...I just took it down when I left and the strips come off clean...smart smart thing I did!!!
