Refinishing old fireplace mantle that was in a housefire

I purchased an old fireplace mantle that came out of a Victorian house that burned. Parts of it were burned pretty badly. I have scraped & sanded as much as I could without ruining it. There are still spots that are charred. I plan on painting it to look distressed. Are there any techniques to seal the charred areas so that it will take the paint?

  • ...Have you considered wood filler , if needed ? Also, sawdust makes for a great wood filler and once it ' cures' can be sanded , painted. If you use either a shellac based " sealer' or a latex based one. ( Zinnser makes one ) you can then paint the surface. I would recommend a bit of research to determine which one you would prefer to use, but personally, I would use the one by Zinnser " Bulls eye 1-2-3". I hope this helps , and sounds like a great find !
