Red Looks We Love

Red is the color of blood, fire, rubies, and roses. Psychologically, humans have an intense reaction to the color red. This fierce color is associated with many feelings, especially love, passion, strength, and energy. Studies show that men are more attracted to women when they wear this assertive hue and that sports teams in red win more. Saturated reds are said to increase appetite and heart rate, whereas warmer shades like Marsala give visitors comfort and energy. No wonder why so many restaurants and brands utilize the effects of this vivid tone!

Traditional farm houses are always painted in a rusty red tone, but why is it that? Back in the day when paint was expensive and scarce, wood was shielded with a recipe consisting of skimmed milk, lime, and red iron oxide which was cheap to make, protective, and long lasting. This turned the wooden frame into a special red hue. Centuries later, as paint became cheaper and more accessible, barns are still painted red out of tradition. Farmhouse chic is a nostalgic style that incorporates vintage patterns and styles reminiscent of life on the farm. Add checkers, vintage Coca-Cola memorabilia, and farmhouse reds to your home to convey sentimental feelings of the simple life.
Subtle Touches

Much like window treatments, accessories can do a great job incorporating your favorite color without drowning your space in paint. Furniture, pillows, and recycled shutters are all brilliant ways to draw some color and inspiration into your most beloved spaces. One of my favorite reasons for painting walls with neutral colors is that it allows you to switch out colors of accessories easily, instantly changing the mood of your room year by year. A little paint and fabric can go a long way, switch up some of your accessories to add subtle touches of red into your home.
Marsala

If you aren’t part of the design world, you may not know that Marsala is Pantone’s 2015 color of the year. Much like the wine that gives this hue it’s name, Marsala is a rich, full-bodied, flavorful shade of red. Dramatic and alluring as it may be, Marsala still has a sense of warmth and comfort that it conveys to any room that dares to dawn such sophistication. As you can see, any style or room can benefit from this earthy shade of red. From modern to traditional, in kitchens or bathrooms, surely there is a space in your home that is craving Marsala.
Window Treatments

Red can be intimidating with it’s punchy, bright, and aggressive saturation. Instead of adorning cabinets or walls with such vibrancy, keep your walls neutral and make your windows pop with a red window treatment. I love how these homes utilized red patterned drapery to add color up the length of the wall without having too much going on visually. Roman Shades are another great way to introduce color, as they add an elegant, finished touch to your home.

Color lovers everywhere understand that red is one of the most coveted hues in homes beaming with brightness. While other colors such as blue, yellow, and purple are all equally appreciated by rainbow enthusiasts, no color evokes as many feelings as vibrant reds do. Best used in the kitchen to increase appetite or in the entry way to give you an extra boost of energy before leaving for work, saturated hues of this color elicit many positive feelings in humans.
