My kitchen counter tops

Our counter tops are a thick plywood topped with laminate. The laminate is starting to look bad. I don't want to get rid of the plywood in order to place expensive granite. My kitchen is a pretty yellow with light oak custom made cabinets and light oak Pergo flooring. What can I do with plywood to make it look nice?

You can paint it, apply laminate on top of the old stuff (I'd have someone else do this; it's very hard to cut) or put any kind of tile on top of it, even granite tile.

There are a lot of things between living with Plywood and installing expensive granite. You could buy new laminate counters at any big box store for 2 or 3 hundred dollars. Plywood will not wear well getting wet, even if painted and will not be sanitary.

There's a cement product out there that, when painted on, looks like concrete counters.

It's easy to build forms with rebar for concrete countertops-which use plywood as the base. There are dozens of washes and dyes to achieve almost any color or look. My husband (a college Professor) did these in my last 2 kitchens-you can cut on them without a cutting board, take any pan of the stove or out of the oven and set it directly on the counter top, low maintenance. It cost about $300.00 dollars for 3 foot deep, 4 foot long 2 portions, 8 feet on the third counter and the a raise bar 2.5 feet by for 4 foot long when we did the last one 6 years ago.

Some of the 'new' laminates are truly beautiful..........................shop around at stores like/Lowes, Home Depot, kitchen/bath remodel stores. Also, on "Fixer Upper', Joanna had Clint apply a wood top to an island and then stained and sealed it..................it was beautiful!!!

We're going through the same dilemma, Cindy. Re-doing some things in our kitchen and the countertops are in good condition but just the wrong color for the new paint colors. I've looked into the Rustoleum kits and the Giani kit. Not sure what we're going to do. They all have pros and cons.
