The hot trend in kitchen cabinets is white. How do you keep them clean
-
Liliana Wells on Mar 01, 2015We painted a previous house cabinets white in the past, 2 or 3 coats, I can't remember. We used spray Rust-oleum. After many years of use, it started to show some use, as it would with any good paint. Do not use a Polyurethane coat as it may yellow with time. The success of any paint job is in the prep work: cleaning, wiping, sanding before and in between coats, priming and so on. There are lots of tutorials on Hometalk. I used a mixture of white vinegar, water and a dash of dish washing liquid in a spray bottle, wiped and rinsed with clean water. I hope this has helped you. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Gale Sanjurjo on Mar 01, 2015thanks for your input. I know I have to use a good oil paint, but it seems like they would be hard to keep clean. I imagine a magic eraser wood work well for dirt, but I worry about grease.Helpful Reply

Shari on Mar 01, 2015I have had white kitchen cabinets for more than 4 years now. Although I admittedly do not fry very often, I do cook at least one full meal every day, plus someone is fixing snacks or getting drinks off and on all day long too, and I don't find white cabinets difficult to care for at all. For some reason, I find the toe kick (the area between the lower cabinet and floor) gets far dirtier than the actual cabinets or doors do. Since I wipe my counter tops down multiple times per day anyway, I take that opportunity to quickly wipe any splatters or fingerprints I happen to see. It really just takes a second if you stay on top of it by making it part of the counter top wiping routine. Only once or twice in 4+ years have I wiped all the cabinets down at once. I normally use Clorox Cleanup to wipe my counter tops so I will typically use that to wipe the cabinets, or as you mentioned, a magic eraser works well too. I LOVE my white kitchen cabinets!Helpful Reply

Lucy Nunn on Mar 02, 2015If it's any consolation, very dark cabinets also show every splatter and puff of flour. I use murphy's wood cleaner wipes around the handles and knobs about once a week.Helpful Reply
