Rene Scott Schmeltz on Mar 03, 2015I've heard that if it's real brass using ketchup does well. and here is another way too Remove the shade and light bulb. Put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands. Unplug the lamp before working on it.2Squeeze a few drops of dish-washing liquid into the bottom of a large plastic cup and fill the cup with hot water to make suds.3Dip a microfiber cloth or other soft rag into the water and wash the lamp. For areas that are difficult to reach, scrub with a soft toothbrush. Dry the lamp with a soft, clean rag.4Saturate a cotton ball with nail polish remover or ammonia and wipe the lamp to remove the lacquer. Do this step outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.5Wash the lamp with soapy water again and wipe it dry.6Apply a drop of brass cleaner to a clean cloth. Wipe the entire piece, working in the direction of the grain.7Allow the cleaner to dry to a white film. Wipe away the film by buffing with a clean microfiber cloth.8Take the lamp outdoors and spray on a light coat of lacquer or polyurethane spray, holding the can 6 inches from the lamp. Apply two to three light coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid drips.9Allow the lamp to dry completely before replacing the bulb and shade or plugging it back in.Helpful Reply
