Insulate attic ceiling

We would like to insulate our seasonal cottage's attic ceiling. We're looking for suggestions for covering the insulation that would have a planked look. It needs to be able to withstand -20 below temps since we close in up in the fall. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sheri, We did our attic on the coast of Maine with breadboard. Tip: paint or stain it before you install! It will be much easier to touch up than to do the whole job after it is installed. We have no heat in the space and use floor model A/C's when we need additional sleeping space. We also installed a plush carpet so sleeping bags are more comfortable when we run out of cots.

Oh, one more thing! We also used prefab vent baffles to control any condensation. Easy to install and readily available. If you use unpacked insulation you will probably want to install a vapor barrier between the insulation and breadboard or whatever you use to finish the space.

Beadboard is pretty. As is ship lap pine. Barb is right, definitely paint or stain first!

Sheri, in response to Jan's question we used 4X8' sheets of pine beadboard. Thin and easy to cut.

Thanks for your responses. These are good ideas but I was hoping to have more of a plank look like the old cottages have when they just stacked boards on end. My concern is putting something up that will shrink and expand with the temperature changes.
