What glaze is used for chalk paint on furniture?

I have been to Lowe's and Home Depot and they don't know what I'm talking about when I ask them about glazes to put on chalk paint and explain that it's wiped off. What does anyone use?

I use Rust-oleum Transformations Decorative Glaze. I purchased it from Home Depot. Each store is probably set up differently, but the one I went to the glaze was in the same aisle as the stains and wood filler. They didn't have a large selection of colors, but you can also order online. I have found Java Brown to be versatile as a glaze color.

@Meleta Littlefield I use glaze over chalk paint, but only after it is waxed.

Go to this site, http://salvagedinspirations.com/best-homemade-chalk-paint-recipes/ BEST Homemade Chalk Paint Recipes This is what I am about to do. With Calcium Carbonate Recipe…which makes good sense since Calcium Carbonate is chalk! I just got it from E-Bay and I will mix it with regular flat/eggshell/matte will give the ‘chalkiest’ CeCe Caldwells wax is very buttery soft and easy to use. Also, if you buy less expensive box store brands Minwax, Briwax, Quick-Tip-Tuesday ~ Mix Mineral Spirits and Wax for That ‘Buttery’ Application. Good Luck J

The Chalk paints all need sealed to give a durable finish, either with wax or acrylic varnish. The wax is the easier option as you only have to rub/brush on & buff off. Good Luck.

It's really a matter of choice when it comes to what you want to put over your chalk paint. I don't care for glaze, but I really love wax! You can get waxes and polys in different finishes, not so sure about glazes. Do some research online and you will get all the answers you need. Good Luck! : )

Hi. There is a difference between a top coat that protects your chalk paint and a glaze. Most glazes are used as a color wash. ie. adding an antiquing or transparent color on your piece. A glaze is typically water based and wiped on thin and then wiped off, leaving small amounts of glaze in crevices and concave details. A top coat such as a polycoat or paste wax is applied on a finished surface. The confusion might be that when you paste wax a piece, you scrub it into the chalk surfaces and then wipe off the excess. When the paste wax is dry, you buff it to a slight sheen. Poly coats are either water or oil base top coats which are brushed or rolled on, and sanding between dry times. Good luck. Hope this guy helps. sk

The glaze is just to distress or antique the piece (not so much for protection)..I have made my own for all my distressing. Combine Faux finsihing glaze with a brown paint (acrylic, usually burnt umber) and depending on the thickness of themix a bit of water. You can control how dark you want the glaze.

I used Rustileum Java Brown from Home Depot and put it right over the chalk paint. I wanted it to seep into the paint alittle since I was looking for a more weathered look. You have to work fast and use very little glaze.
