Here is the first few loads of fresh tree clippings, I have received from a local tree cutting service.

After 1 year, the mulch piles are half their original size

Yikes...I didn't let mine sit...at least not the first pile..Im in Michigan, also. The second pile sat for a while...but still only about a month or so...it was mostly pine tree ...ugh..I always 'learn' after the fact lol
