This project is done on napkins, but it would be great for T shirts, jeans, art on paper, or anything. This is perfect to make an original creation to wear or use in the home.
With fabric paint, string, and a piece of cloth or even art notebook pages you can create your own designs to make a new shirt or hang an original picture on the wall.
There are many colors available, but you can also mix primary colors to make your own shades. Plastic gloves came with this fabric dye and I hesitated to put them on, but I was glad I did when I began the process of dying the napkins. You will need small containers and a utensil to stir if you buy the dry dye as I did. I had a left over unused knife from fast food breakfast. Plastic wear saves clean up!
I used plastic snack dishes (under $1.25), string, fabric dye and napkins.
I soaked the string in the dish of dye, then lay it on the napkin. I folded the thin cardboard over with the napkin half on top the string and pressed down.
Inside the folded thin cardboard is the napkin folded over the wet string with the dye. I left the end of the string dry and used it for a handle to pull the string out as I continued to press.
Each design was different as I worked through each of the six napkins.
Then I repeated the process with red dye on another string. I laid it right over the black and closed over the cardboard again.
Here are two similar ones with the first step in black and the second with the red over it. I think it needs a little bit of a 3rd color, but I left it with just two.
On paper this would be more pronounced and showy. I may make one for a picture frame on art paper. I can use the art notebook to close on the string.

Oh, I just saw a video on Facebook using this technique and felt that it was way out of my league. Now I feel confident in giving it a try- thank you!

Wendy, if I can do it ANY one can! I love creating but lack the talent my oil painting family possess, but I am content if I can create and enjoy my own works. I hope you do try it!
