Tiles on my shower and bathtub surround

I asked a question recently about upgrading my kitchen counters and was overwhelmed with responses which I will be using in the near future. 2nd question. Can I tile over my shower and tub inserts or do I need to remove them. Worried about removing and then having to replace all of the water proof boards. Any tips from Hometalk alumni?

  • Remove & do it properly - it will save you big time in the end I prefer using Shluter products & membranes to help ensure I don't have any moisture issues in the walls. As for what you will need to do, well one wont know until you open up the space

You have to remove them, your only asking for big problems if you skip steps like the one you are facing.

@Kathleen Replacing the material behind the tiles is not hard. Green board or cement board (which ever you need to do) is almost like hanging regular sheet rock. And, if there are any mold issue, (or other troubles) you can take care of them NOW, not when they become a real problem.

    You have to remove it!

Had my bathroom remodled 5yrs ago. Are you happy with your bathtub. Because if you are going to put in new cement board, consider that shape your bathtub is on?

If you are going through a complete redo anyway, for sure get rid of the surround, it might be scary to look at what is behind it but that is also a good thing, I agree with everyone here, the pros and the do-it your selfers The water board is not difficult to replace and very similar to regular sheetrock, so if you have the funds and can do it right you should .

Thank you everyone for your ideas and ideas. I just might have to wait and let a pro do this for me. Only trying to update my bathrooms for resale and trying to invest as little as possible. Maybe I will just hang some nice new shower curtains. LOL.
