How can I make new lumber look like barn wood?

Darla on Mar 15, 2015You can use a wire brush on them, and "stain" them with this solution: let fine steel wool soak overnight or longer in vinegar, and paint the wood with it. It makes a gray-brown color. If it's too dark, you can wipe them with thin white or light gray paint.Helpful Reply

At Charlotte's House on Mar 15, 2015Exactly what Darla said... vinegar and steel wool is my favorite stain for aging... lots of folks like to hammer and bang the new wood with a chain or something to 'rough' it up also. Good luck!Helpful Reply

BBB on Mar 15, 2015I take grey latex paint and add water to it. Then wash it over the wood. To get darker spots, like the knots in the wood , do the same with black paint and wipe off.Helpful Reply

William Tillis on Mar 15, 2015I have a friend that was successful in "aging" wood by using low pressure sand blasting. The low pressure caused only the softer wood of the grain to be eaten away, leaving it to look like wood that was old or maybe had been worn by running water.Helpful Reply

Chip Bratcher on Mar 15, 2015Thanks. I'll be triming out my basement in rough sawn 1"x4"s and creating a wainscoting from used barn tin. I have read many suggestions on the steel wool and vinegar, some included using tea in the solution which I think I'll leave out. I'm hoping to achieve a silver/grey color. Will the final color show up immediatly or will it have to dry for awhile ? It seems like I saw that the steel wool vinegar continues to darken the longer it sits. I guess I will mix a small amount of the solution , moniter the solutions color maybe take a picture to make it easier to duplicate and apply it to some scrap lumber, give it time to dry and see what happens. Thanks again.Helpful Reply
