How to keep a bedroom warm in the north, over a garage?

Diane on Mar 15, 2015I would recommend insulating and drywalling the ceiling in the garage area. We have the same set up and that bedroom is actually the warmest room in the house (with the vents closed).Helpful Reply

Lee Cunningham Green on Mar 15, 2015if insulation etc is not what you are able to do right now, an electric heater, one that looks like a fireplace is relitavely inexpensive and really does wonders if you need it for a space smaller than 1000 square feet.Helpful Reply

G B on Mar 16, 2015My bedroom was frigid with cold air seeping through the floorboards. My carpet installer suggested adding roofing felt beneath the carpet pad to help block the air. Wonderful suggestion. The addition of the carpeting and a new window made the room considerably warmer.Helpful Reply

K on Mar 16, 2015Invest in a duel control electric blanket- or an electric mattress pad! Comfortable controllable warmth without heavy stifling layers of blankets! That with area rugs with decent pads & heave curtains!! Plus make sure there's no air coming in through windows & doors :)Helpful Reply

Carol on Mar 16, 2015Definately insulate the garage ceiling. I would akso check into blown in insulation in the bedroom outside walls and in the space above the bedroom. We had an old house in NY and the first things we did was insulate the attic and put ip storm windows, we were going to chech into adding insulation under the floors of the house but we got trNsfered to PA. In PA we added insulation to the attic and we're trying to figure out what to so with the brick and plaster walls when we got transferred to southern AZ. I believe in insulation and storm doors. You can also insulate your garage doors which will help also.Helpful Reply

Capernius on Jun 02, 2015Step #1) insulate the garage ceiling & walls. Step # 2) insulate the exterior walls(blown insulation works wonders). Step #3) Get a heated mattress pad. If that does not do enough to keep you warm, then: Step #4) there is a electric heater that looks like a radiator...puts out TONS of heat...here in the midwest, they run about $40 - $50, but when you're cold, they are worth every penny of it.Helpful Reply
