A neighbor gave me these chairs when she moved. She said they were her Grandmother's and she thought they had to be over 100 years old. Does anyone think this could be correct?
Trying to determine how old they chairs could be. A neighbor gave them to me.

Just the tips i use to check out antiques while in an antique market. If you were lucky enough to get the whole set one may have a STAMP on the underside of the cushion someplace with company name ....that usually indicates its 1920's and up and most arent dated but have company names you can google. no stamp doesnt necessarily mean they are newer or reproductions. My daughter has an app where you can enter just about any picture you have taken and itll search for itself to find similar and exact matches all over the web. I havent invested in that just yet but i may if i get to go do a lot of antiquing this spring with my lady friends. (hope hope hope....been very ill for last two spring/summers so no travel cept with hubby yearly...:(

These are empire revival. Do not think the fabric is original. They are over 100 years old!

First, the chairs have been recovered, probably some time in the '70s judging by the type and color of the fabric. Gotta love that orange! As for the age of the chairs, I would say that they date somewhere to the late 1880s and are probably walnut or mahogany based on the grain of the wood or lack thereof. They have wheels on the legs. Are the wheels wooden or brass? Many pieces of furniture of their era had wheels so that they could be moved out of the way to allow space in the room they occupied for dancing or playing active parlor games. They are beautiful and I can't tell if they've been refinished by looking at your photo. Turn them upside down and look at how they are joined and the types of screws used. Although, some or all of the screws could have been replaced through the years and during reupholstering.

If you are not fond of orange..check Pinterest or Google under "painting velvet furniture". It's amazing the new techniques they have now. Tiny wheels also help determine age.

Wow..thank you all for the advice and answers. The chairs were reupholstered in the 70's by my friends mother. The wheels do look to be brass. From the little that I know the chairs don't look like they have ever been refinished. Thanks once again I will continue to research them with all the great tools you guys have given me.
