Question about glass tile for a backsplash
I really want to do a glass tile (the subway kind of design)on my back-splash in my kitchen; white with a dark grey or black grout. When my husband and I were looking at thetiles in Lowes they looked pretty translucent and he was concerned about beingable to see the adhesive under the tiles. Is this something that we need to prepare specially for or is this somethingthat you just don’t see once the tile is up?
Thanks!

Moxie on Mar 20, 2015For wall tile you use the setting grout with adhesive in it or if your mixing you add it - just in lieu of troweling it on the wall and striking it with the teeth side of the trowel for equal depth of setting bed you have to additionally smooth it out and when you set make sure you have solid nonadhesive and butter the back of the tile to make sure...just watch the front plane that it stays true...they do make glass tiles that have true color in them (even white) so it is not an issue. Hold one up to a dark background and see what you see. You can also do a sample board with a few to see what it will look like and lean up on your wall to make sure before you buy a bunch and so all the work that it is what you want. Be sure you don't get too much setting grout that it squishes up and fills in the joints that you want your contrasting color grout in..a real bummer to remove after it sets. With glass tile be SURE you get grout that is unsanded...if you get the kind with sand in it your tiles will get scratched when you grout. Use the little rubber spacers to keep your joints the same (or some tile has a little bump out on them that spaces them for you built in) - get one of the thick rubber tools (like a trowel but with a thick black pad of rubber on it) to pat them in place to stay. Hope some of that helps...I've done my own tile kitchen backsplash and showers but by no means a professional (just too cheap to pay for labor lol).Helpful Reply

Susie on Mar 21, 2015If you are using glass that is transparent (you can see through it) you should be sure to use white thinset. Most thinset is grey and that will dull out the colors. Keep it bright.Helpful Reply

Brenda on Mar 21, 2015Ditto Susie- there's also a special adhesive that's near the glass block in the tile area of lowes & home depot to check out...be sure to seal your grout when you're done for years of easy cleaning.Helpful Reply
