Need to stain stairs and need fast drying

I posted this before but today I saw a post somewhere about Rust-Oleum Nano Shield Fast Dry Stain. It says it's dry and ready for a top coat in 2 hrs. I've never done this before. It doesn't say what to use as a top coat. What do I use and what's a fast drying one? Does this mean I can use these stairs in just a few hours? I have a dog and 3 cats and I use my stairs a lot so that's why I want fast drying.

I wouldn't. When I did my stairs I did every other one and blocked them off overnight (because of the cat). You can see it here (http://www.therozyhome.com/blog/the-foyer-project). I still didn't walk on them for 48 hours. After 48 hours, I covered the originals in brown paper and then I stained the others. It takes longer that way, but the finish has withstood very heavy traffic (and furniture/appliances being moved in and out) and there has been no damage.

Your project is beautiful. Questions: 1. When you stained every other one, did you leave the cat out in the house, and if so, what kept it from walking on the newly stained treads? Or did you lock the cat in a room for the time you were doing this? 2. After 48 hrs, why did you cover the now-dried treads? What kind of stain did you use? A handyman came by the other day and he told me he thought doing every other one was unnecessary, but that had been suggested to me before. I have to get up and down the stairs every day so that seems like a good course of action, but I know I can keep the dog off the steps with a baby gate, but my 3 cats would have to stay in a room of their own during this process because baby gates mean zero to them -- up, over, around, etc.
