How to clean the burners on gas stoves?

The burners and spill ring around the burners on my old gas stove are black and yucky- sticky. Does anyone have a way to clean them, without oven cleaner chemicals?

Some people stick them in. A bag of ammonia and let them sit over night. I know this isn't really what your wanting. Sometimes oil takes oil off so you could try some kind of shortening to see if it will take it off, just make sure and clean with soapy water because using a food product it will go rancid.

One of the best ways is to soak in white vinegar and then scrub with Bar Keepers Friend. They will will look like new!

A ziploc bag with ammonia. I use a plastic scrubby in the morning. Sometimes it takes more than one night's "soaking".

@Janetndavis Being leery of some home remedies as I am at times I actually tried this on my range. Yes sometimes you have to leave them longer but to my amazement it does work. I also learned that the less amount of ammonia you use, about an ounce, the better. I guess it has something to do with the ammonia gassing and attacking the cooked on gunk. If I wasn't such a messy cook I probably wouldn't have had this problem to begin with but at least I now know a simple fix.

I use vinegar and baking soda , I find harsh chemicals to much for me . Ammonia gives me a headache . I put them in the sink with half full of really hot water and the cup or 2 of vinegar depending on the depth of your sink . Let sit for and hr . Then take out and drain. Set in sink and sprinkle with baking soda and scrub , then pour more vinegar over and watch reaction . When it's done I scrub again. Then rinse and dry . Works for mine every time.

I make a paste of Dawn and baking soda, brush it on with a small paint brush, leave it on over night then scrub off with a non-scratch sponge. What ever is left, barkeepers friend will probably take it off. The hot vinegar also works really well.

I had really good results with Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and well used Scotch Brite pads. The reason for well used is to avoid scratching.

Thanks, to all the great answers! The ammonia soak for the burners and grates and vinegar and soda for the stove top worked. Thanks again.
