Fixing a bad paint job

Debbee Anthony Carlson on Mar 24, 2015what didi you use to clean the wall paper glue off the wall?? What did you wash and rinse the walls with? How old is the paint? I've always used TSP to clean walls before painting. You can't buy that anymore but there is something to replace it but I can't remember the name. A paint employee should be able to help. As far as the age of the paint - it should last five years or more if stored properly. There's a few things for you to check. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Lori on Mar 24, 2015It sounds like the paint was old and perhaps there was some rust from the paint can that got mixed in with the paint. When you mix the paint it may seem like it disappears but it will show up on your walls. Fresh paint/primer will cover it up. This happened to me too!Helpful Reply

Ruth wallace on Mar 24, 2015There is a product called, zisser, is made to be more covering than regular primer. Over time glue from borders leach down walls and do what you mentioned, zisser camouflages it. Hope it helps.Helpful Reply

Cindy Marks on Mar 24, 2015It sounds like you have a ventilation problem. When your ventilation fan is not working properly or is not strong enough for the room you get condensation which will run down the walls. I would first look at that possibility and if that is not the problem I would lightly sand the walls, prime with zinzer or a stain blocking primer and then paint with a product that is specifically designed for kitchen/bath.Helpful Reply

Kevin D Vance on Mar 24, 2015Start over , sand the wall, prime with either zisser or or an primer that has stain lock qualities. If it bleeds through then prime again . Paint your final with new paint. Check to make sure the ventilation in your bathroom is okay, If not install a better fan to remove moisture from the bathroom.Helpful Reply

Sandy Harrelson on Mar 24, 2015Lightly sand it and then put a coat of Killz...not sure if I am spelling that correctly...over it. Let it completely dry before you paint over it. I bought this in the paint department at Home Depot.Helpful Reply

DanaH on Mar 24, 2015Awesome is a heavy duty cleaner found at the Dollar store. I've heard some use it with success to clean carpet stains and other things. I recommend a primer that says it will cover stains which zinzer and Kilz will do (read the label) and paint again.Helpful Reply

Lynda Benoit on Mar 24, 2015You can strain your paint through an old pair of pantyhose to remove the rust.Helpful Reply

Betsy on Mar 25, 2015Try throughly rubbing down your walls with denatured alcohol. This should help remove any traces of glue from the paper and/or anything left over from the Awesome or the combination of the two. After that I would make a decision about whether to prime or not before you paint.Helpful Reply

Rita Revell on Mar 25, 2015I would use a cleaner like TSP and the prime with Zisser. I found that this product covers a multitude of sins. The paint with the color paint you want. I live in a manufactured home, and some of my walls are those funky board covered with that vinyl "wallpaper". Zissers really helped the paint have something to hold onto. Good luck.Helpful Reply
