Remote controlled battery operated candles never last

No matter what brand of battery operated candle, no matter what brand of battery that I use, when I go to use them they are always dead. I never use them except to check that when I first put new batteries in them that they work. Then they sit there maybe months to weeks and when I hit the remote to light them they are dead! Has any one else had this problem?
