I had to have this! Any guess as to when this was made and were, bought it several years ago, the is wood missing behind one of the women, very detailed wood work, finish is deceiving it is not in great shape, feet and legs are in bad shape, former owner must have had pets. I have tried several restore methods on wood, with very little success. I seldom paint wood but I am considering doing a white distressed finish with bold black and white striped fabric, when it is recovered.

There is a 2 part epoxy wood rebuilding product, in a yellow can at Lowes, which works great. You can mould it, shape it, shave it and sand it. I've used it tons of times and it's a fabulous product. Super chair and I think you're right to funk it up!

Most likely this chair was made in Italy in the 50's or 60's. Susan Sease has the right idea about restoring the wood. Painting this chair would really look great. would truly look like a piece of art! Send photos when you are finished!!

It looks like a Bergere Chair. They were popular in France in the 17th century. My mother had a couple that were pretty ornate and gilded. The more carved and intricate ones would probably fall into the Louis XIV style. I'd have it looked at before painting it; some can sell for a lot of money.

@Mandy Brown I was told when I bought it, it was Italian provincial?? I was not sure if dealer knew what they were talking about or not, just liked it and it was not $$. I will check that out, I have not been able to find this particular style.

This is a pic of one of my mother's chairs. She sold them recently to an antiques dealer.

oh I would never paint this piece! Check with a reputable refinisher and see what it would take to refinish it original! Love it!

I have a table that was a great grandmothers... my mom tried working on the very damaged finish several times, with several different kinds of products. she was going to give it away... so I took it. I ended up painting it without any kind of antique preservation guilt... because of the shape it was in. sounds like the chair is in really distressed shape. if it's that bad, then painting is an option. you might check with a reputable antique dealer to make sure you don't have a million dollar item.... ;)

@Erin Yes, I'm gonna check it for any kind of identification mark when i get home. I don' think I have ever looked at botton, it very heavy/solid.

I love the black and white idea. Zebra print or toile would look great, too. I would go black on the wood, but that's just me.

I would check it out better before doing anything to it . Just saying.

Terrific chair! Would go black on the wood, too, as Angel Morris. The sculptures look kind of art deco.

Can Anyone recommend an online site that may be able to give me more info on it, before I take a trip into city with it.
  • Cherie Cherie on Mar 28, 2015
Sorry, I don't have any site recommendations, just a comment. Please check first to see if it IS a valuable piece. If it isn't, I think your idea with white paint (maybe distressed slightly or antiqued a little) and black/white fabric would really look great! Never seen a chair like that before so you may have a one-of-a-kind piece and would be a shame to change it!

Have you used google image search before? You can upload your own photo, then search for visually similar photos. This has helped me when I was stuck identifying pieces before.

OK this what I found out. Renaissance Revival period produced 1860 - 1870 . French Rococo style, popular in Victorian Revival era in mid 19th century. Retail value $1300 - 1600 in perfect condition. Any damage to wood work or fabric will lower retail value. The one I have, the wood work is damaged, nicks, scratches and a missing arm on one of women. Fabric is all intact (original to piece??) dirty water stained also ugly IMO. What would you do?

Also just put a request for Antique Roadshow tickets in August. I can wait until then, I have plenty of projects to keep me busy.
