  • Caulking with silicone in it is the best and 100% is even better. As for painting over it I would not worry about painting over it at all in the applications you have described. I caulk after I paint and on bathroom vanities and kitchen countertops try to either match the countertop or use clear silicone to carefully caulk any cracks. White looks good too if done neatly. I have never painted over caulking and I have been painting for many years. Even when I use caulking after I paint trim to disguise the cracks, I do not ever paint over it. Caulking can make things look fresh and neat. Good luck

If you go to the paint department of Home Depot or Lowes, you will see what looks like 1000 different ones. You can ask the paint person for help or just look for the ones that say for bathrooms and kitchens and also paintable. A lot of them are clear so you might not need to paint over it but there are plenty that you are able to paint over.

If you want to paint over it your best bet is to go with a siliconized latex. Both DAP and Red Devil make excellent caulks. They're available in various colors or you can simply go with clear as I do. Do not choose a 100% silicon caulk. Generally paint will not adhere to pure silicon although I've been told there are a couple of brands that are now offering a paintable silicon but I've yet to use them.
