Water damage on press wood kitchen cabinets
-
This looks like mdf cabinets which have not been properly sealed and have swollen as the water was absorbed. I would suggest you sand out as much as you can and use a wood filler to make good the damage. Sand the cabinets and apply an mdf or particle board sealer as per product instructions.

Question... how did you sand it? Did you have to use a special kind of grit or sander? Or just get some sandpaper and have at it?

You can sand it in the usual way, just don't inhale. You don't know what's in it and it can give you a real throat irritation!

Yes always when sanding cover eyes and nose, I forgot to do that one time, and after just half an hour my throat hurt bad........I've heard that you can use a very gentle sanding on MDF, apparently the best carpenters use MEDEX to cover the MDF so to protect from damp, you must have had a lot of steam in your kitchen, with MDF it M&S be kept as airy as poss good luck

Also sayin bathroom areas, often the best MDF is best for bathrooms, as wood can swell, must always be good ventilation in these areas.....

I did the same with my cabinet next to my stovetop. The MDF on one side expanded from the moisture of cooking. I sanded, stained and applied wood veneer to the bottom edge and it looks really nice.

It is important to prime well before painting and top coating. Also make sure you cover every spot, or the swelling can recur...I found that out. Also let dry really well between steps.

you may also want to consider looking into buying 2 replacement doors. Maple is a good paint grade wood. Get them unfinished and paint to match the rest of the kitchen. I had two broken doors on a bathroom vanity and a local cabinet maker made me replacements at a reasonable price and I finished them to match the rest of the vanity.
