Need help on cornice

My husband has made some wooden cornices, and we want to cover them with batten and then fabric. How much batten do I need to cover the valance board? I am thinking maybe I should double the batten, make it less formal since we might decide to make a nail-head trim to them, to tone down the formal look of the curtains. What do you think?

high or low loft depending on the finished look you would like. High loft will appear to be a more padded look and low loft will look less padded. If your fabric that you are covering it with is thick you could just do a quilt batting?

Thanks for your comment. I think I will use the quilt batting single padding. I had already cut the pieces out. I have ordered a swatch from Joann's Fabric store. It is faux leather. It looks really pretty on the internet. We will have to wait and see. Thanks for your comment.
