How about wrapping the hangers in rope and painting the metal a bright country color.

Paint is always an easy fix. Spray paint them to blend into the background. Also, you can make a "box" out of nice wood trim to cover the sides and paint or stain them.

If you sew, maybe make a valance to go with your kitchen decor and velcro them to the sides and you could still remove to clean when needed!

If it is close to the ceiling, try the idea of a 'box' with a clear a sheet of a frosted plexi-glass. Some have designs. The box could be painted like the ceiling or a contrast color or even wood finish.
