Suggestions wanted

I would like to freshen up this oak casual dining set and would like some suggestions. I was thinking of doing the top in a creamy white with some light distressing. How would I go about darkening the rest of the table and chairs? Is there anything I can do without having to sand the chairs, etc.? Any other ideas would be appreciated.
This is what it is today. This is the dining area in the family room. Saltillo floor, beige and latte walls. Brown sectional couch with brick, yellow and orange accents on the area rug. Bookcases and entertainment center are wood too.

I would sand the top down and stain it a darker color and paint the lower half and chairs in the creamy white. I have found that painted table tops scratch and chip pretty easily when they're used regularly, so leaving the top wood would prevent that for the most part. I would love to see the after pictures when you're done with it. It's going to be beautiful i'm sure.

I agree with @Amy Ogden-Paparone . I painted the top of my table because it was just a bad 70's look and the top does chip. You also have to be careful if you poly it because it will yellow if it is in the sunlight. Paint the bottom half of the table and chairs and leave the tops stained. Love the cream though!

@Ana Bacallao I agree with the above two comments. Perhaps the top in a refreshed wood grain and cream below. You could do the chairs with cream seats and the rest of the chair in the darker colour. Would do one chair first to decide if you want the rest done as well.

use a water based, self leveling poly finish on the top. It is hard as nails and is relatively error proof to apply.

Go with a chalk paint (CeCe Caldwell) no sanding required. Seal the piece with endurance their strongest sealer. As far as color can't go wrong with a Vintage White.

I have a table similar to this and I used chalk paint to paint the chairs and table legs. I sanded the top and stained it a dark color and it turned out so cute! I love chalk paint. because you don't have to sand or prime!

I love these ideas! I, too have a similar table and chairs that I will paint EXCEPT I do not know what kind of paint brush to use! Any suggestions?

You can also ask an employee at Home Depot or your local hardware store which polyurethane would be the best for your table. I like gloss, but I know some people like the matte look.

I just saw a table and chair set in a magazine where they had painted each of the chairs a different bright colour, and the table white. It was lovely!

I would paint the chair backs and legs a colour and the base of the table leaving the top of the table and the chair seats their natural colour. The colour choice is yours of course.

I would chalk paint it, just clean with some Dawn Dish Soap & water, wipe it off really good & paint away. No priming or sanding. Finish with a good couple of coats of non-yellowing Polyurethane on the table top & maybe you can get buy with just one on the chairs. Lots of colors to chose from. Have fun.
