Old fountain garden

Vicki Rogers on Apr 07, 2015@Eve K Hi Eve, would your fountain allow drainage? I'm going to turn a small pond on our patio into a flower bed, because the frogs are diving me CRAZY! We are going to drain it and drill holes in it for drainage, before adding rock, soil, and plants. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Lee Govan on Apr 07, 2015Hi Vicki, if your old fountain doesn't have drainage, put in a layer of scoria (stone that looks like it has lots of holes in it) then a 1 - 2 inch layer of charcoal, then your soil. This will stop the roots from swimming and the charcoal filters the water that may be ponding underneath and keeps your plant drier.Helpful Reply

Patricia on Apr 08, 2015Hi Eve. We had an old fountain that leaked so I had my husband drill a couple of drain holes at the back and the very bottom shelf. Then I used a layer of burlap under the succulents (soil on top of that) and used some rocks I had in the fountain originally to hold moisture and the plants in place. They don't need a lot of water and it drains perfect!Helpful Reply
