Tammie Housley on Apr 12, 2015Try painting some chalk paint on a hidden area & see how it goes on and if it seems to stick well. My impression is that chalk paint will stick to pretty much anything. What a beautiful piece! Can't wait to see it when it's finished!Helpful Reply

Carole on Apr 12, 2015A light sand (wear a mask - you don't know what is in that paint) and then a coat of oil based primer or stain blocker - the one with the shellac in it ought to stop any bleed through then chalk paint over it would be my thoughts. That way you won't need to apply multiple coats of chalk paint which is expensive to cover all that black. If it were a lighter colour - anything other than black or red, I would have suggested just try the chalk paint right over it, but I think a coat of primer would help in this case. Chalk paint being quite expensive it is best if you can manage with one or two coats. What colour were you going to paint it? I have only used the Duck Egg and French Linen from ASCP and found the Duck Egg gave a better coverage - only one coat needed, whilst the French Linen needed two coats. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Leigh on Apr 13, 2015Light sand, Zinsser primer from Lowes or HD (with the bullseye on it). This stuff covers anything and preps it for painting. Tell them you are covering oil paint and they will get you the right one! I put a little Flotrol in the paint which eliminates brush marks.Helpful Reply
