School Desk Make- Over! How I Taught an Old Desk a New Trick!

I saw this desk sitting all alone at Salvo-Chic just waiting to be made pretty all over again. For $6, I just felt sorry for it and had to bring it home! It just so happened it was about to be made into a birthday present for my Peanut!
Needless to say, it was a rusty old mess. Years of sticky fingers and kicky legs had taken it's toll on this poor little guy.
It needed a really good sanding down. Just to remove all the loose pieces of paint and rust.
I tried to sand lightly, because that turquoise needed to stay. Gorgeous right?
I pulled out the secret weapon. Petroleum jelly. This was going to keep that authentic, original turquoise color for me.
I put a thin layer of PJ on the areas that I wanted the turquoise to remain or show through before I spray painted white. Not too much or you'll get runs in the paint.
My not so secret weapons ;)
After sanding and staining the seat with Provincial, it looks gorgeous and like it belongs in an old school house.
Once I gave it a couple coats of satin white, I gave it a light sanding by hand to let the paint flake off where the PJ was. Just perfectly distressed. The way an old school desk should be!

OnBlissStreet on Apr 14, 2015Thanks Hannah! I had one when I was a little girl that was the same color, now my peanut has one. I swear her little butt hasn't left the seat since Friday! xoxo
