What can I do with the curbside find?

We found this driving down the street a few days before Big Trash Day in our town. It's solid wood, nothing wrong with it other than I don't care for the color/stain on top....but what can we do with it besides put it in the corner of a room. We can paint it or not and my husband has incredibly good carpentry skills so the sky's the limit - I'm just a little short on ideas right now. How about you?

I would remove the door repaint it a cheerful color and make it into a pet condo. If you don't have a small pet I'm sure your local animal shelter would have someone adopting a pet who would love to have somewhere warm & cozy for them to sleep.
  • Following. I am going to be removing a cabinet similar to this here soon. Love the pet condo idea!

@Kitchen Kelli great score from the streets. There are tons of things you can do - it would great painted in a couple of complimentary colours - not sure of your colour scheme in the house. If you have an entertaining room perhaps convert to a wine rack - I would suggest removing the center of the door and putting some chicken wire in place of the panel. Attach some short feet to the bottom - similar to finials - always a classy feature. Why not tap the creativity on this site and do a few searches - repurpose cabinet, refinishing furniture etc. Good luck and I hope you come back to post an update pic.

After checking well for termites, and spraying it very well, I would ask my husband to ad the top shelves and a door to turn it into a colonial cupboard for the dining room, or anywhere in the house.

If using for storage for kids games and toys Put a checker board on top with paint and a chalk board either or both. Put some box on side for checker storage and/or chalk. Shape lends itself to box game storage

@Kris hardisty I LOVE this idea as a person who collects old board games! I COULD paint the checker board since it's just boxes and nothing fancy - or a scrabble board! What a great idea! Thank you

I picture removing the door and turning it into a mini wine/bar stand. Store bottles of wine inside on their sides, might want to buy a wine rack and remove the shelf. And varnish the wood. Put a pieces of clear glass on top or paint the top to look like light marble. And use that to put glasses, a serving tray, some condiments when you have friends over.

Here's my 2 cents...If this octogon(I think?) shaped cabinet is MDF...Paint it white inside & outside. Get THIS! fromhttp://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/indian-inlay-stencil-furniture.html Paint stencils any way you want. If this is real wood, sand down to bare wood, then RE-stain it in a deep dark cherry stain. Add the stencils any way you want...USE white paint.

@Kitchen Kelli It would make a cute little outdoor fire pit, you'd have to use that cement board stuff though. The door is already there to hold a small propane tank. Just a thought. :)

Do you have pets? Cat retreat or dog bed with the shelves taken out of it and a cushion in there. You could also add a scratching post to the top for height and of course - claw sharpening.

Here's an idea! Make hanging rack(s) for your wine glasses, maybe re-sand it and varnish or paint it to suit your decor, change door to glass, mount it in the upper corner. You now have a lovely display case for your fine crystal wine glasses. If you don't drink alcoholic beverages, maybe store your china set in it.

I would paint it and put a new marble top on and put in a corner as my coffee bar. Add roll out shelves to hold creamer, sugar, cups and the different flavored coffee containers for my coffee pot.
