Old polaroid pictures

Does anyone know how to remove the hard paper backing off polaroid pictures? I have some pictures that are almost 50 years old and want to cut down on the storing bulk. Thanks.

I wonder if that would ruin the pics, since once the ink is exposed even by a slight slit, it will fade. Some of mine cracked along the edges and are now green or super light. Why not scan and keep them digitally instead, with a back up?

I think it would also, does anyone know how to get them apart from years of being in a box? They are stuck together!

@Carol I remember pulling the backs off some of the newer pictures; but, that was way back when they were first printed. A family member suggested using an exacto knife to lift a corner and then maybe loosen the picture more by heating it with a hair dryer. Not sure I want to do this though. Thanks for helping.

I know putting papers/stickers in the freezer unsticks them...not sure I would take a chance with the ink in the pics though.

@B. Enne I've heard of this and tried it with a picture that got stuck to the glass; but, had no luck. I think you are right, it is too risky. Thanks for your help.

Doubt if Polaroid company is still around but I would take them ..or ask...Kodak or find a photo print shop. Grab the phone book and let your fingers do the walking! When you get them "unstuck" copy them.

Scan and reprint. Or scan and store digitally--that'll cut down the bulk!

I also suggest scanning, that way you can share with family and friends. I loaded most of my older pics to Facebook. I tagged "family only" and we shhare back and forth all the time. I even got a portable scanner, a couple of years ago, when we have a family reunion, I take it and scan photos others have that I don't. Uploaded quite a few ancestors to ancestry.com for future generations. I have the Kodak P811, it is completely portable, even can run on batteries, no computer needed to scan as it scans to a SD card.

@Jane Thank you all. I am convinced that it's either leave them as is or scan and save. Appreciate your thoughts and opinions! :)
