Can kitchen hardware be changed other than painting?

I have an older home and I am not in love with the kitchen cabinets and hardware on the cabinets. (If I was at home I would make a pic for you to see, but I am at work.) I am going to paint my cabinets over summer break but I have so much hardware that I cannot afford to change it. The drawers, doors, and visible hinges have handles that are a coppery color (I've tried restoring them as copper) that look almost like the shape of a spade. It's the shape that I hate the most. Any ideas?

Some people come up with brilliant ideas. Have a look and see if any of these inspire you. http://www.hometalk.com/b/2009554/door-knobs

I do love some of those ideas. However, I worried about changing the handles because they match the hinges and the hinges are visible (outside mounted). Would it look back if I painted the hinges the same as the cabinets so they would blend in instead of standing out so much?

I would give it a try using some water based paint. Have a damp cloth ready, paint, and then immediately remove the paint before it dries. That will give you an idea of what it would look like, without committing you if you do not like it. If you are happy with the result, then investigate which is the correct paint to use. Otherwise keep your eyes open at flea markets and see if you can find something that you love, at little cost!

How about glueing a small glass or other knob you like onto the spade part to beef up what's there! It's fairly easy (though time consuming) to remove all of the hardware to spray paint it any color you like & you will have to remove the hinges to paint the cabinets anyway- trust me- if you paint over them they will peel over time & look terrible!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the EXACT handle and hinges that I have on my cabinets! If I didn't know better, I would think you took this picture at my house!

@Diane Can you post a pic of your kitchen? That would really help to decide what to do with them.
