What to do with wood patio furniture?

We (stupidly) bought an expensive wood set from Pottery Barn, extension dining table, 8 chairs, 2 lounge chairs and a side table. They were painted a dark brown wood color. Well, even though they were covered during bad weather, they did NOT wear well. I need to redo them. Paint them, stain them and then what to use to protect them with? Poly? We live in So California and they get the full afternoon sun.

@drprof sounds like an ambitious project. For the final protection I would use an outdoor polyurethane. If using an oil based stain you will need to use an oil based poly. Good luck.

Spar varnish is what is used on boats. A couple of coats should be all you need and looks great. Stain if you want to then spar. Hope this helps.

My husband just refurbished our acacia table and four arm chairs. He cleaned, tightened screws, wood puttied a couple of spots, and lightly sanded, then using a sprayer, painted each with Benjamin Moore Exterior Stain (latex) in Georgetown Gray. The stain comes in a large color palette, and the GG coordinates nicely with our other yard seating. He used the sprayer so that he could paint every bit of the furniture, and to mitigate having obvious brush strokes. It took two coats, they dried quickly, and are GORGEOUS! We are In MA but our patio is in full afternoon sun. My job is to now sew some new cushions in sunbrella fabric.

@ Thank you for your suggestion. Did you use anything to seal it with? Mary

Forget painting, forget varnishing, either of these will require refinishing. After you strip the original paint, simply refinish with a quality oil finish. It's fast, and easy to redo when needed. Paint and varnish (even spar varnish) will deteriorate and require stripping again. An oil finish simply requires a new coat of oil finish.

@Kadajo Thank you for the suggestion. I had thought about that and even had bought cans of Tung oil. The finish is so bad I would have to do ALOT of sanding to get it to look decent enough to oil. Would you suggest that I do a dark oil stain and then oil on top of it? Would that work to make it look better? Thanks, Mary
