Shari on Apr 28, 2015It is my opinion anything painted and exposed to the harsh sun, day in and day out, is going to need more regular maintenance than something exposed to less, or no sun. I, too, have 3 fiberglass exterior doors but one faces south and gets the hot Florida sun on it all day long. It also gets pelted with a lot of wind and rain. Despite being painted 3 1/2 or 4 years ago, it is badly in need of being repainted again, which I'm planning to do within the next week or two. When I painted it before, I just used exterior latex paint so I'll be checking back to see if any of the paint professionals respond with a better suggestion. However, I have a feeling oil-based paint is probably considered more durable than latex in this situation and that will likely be the recommendation we'll get. Frankly though, I'd rather repaint every few years with latex than use any oil-based product due to the messy clean-up it requires. On the positive side, I don't really mind repainting the doors so much. It's not hard, time-consuming or expensive, and choosing a different color every few years for the doors (and shutters) is really the only opportunity I get for a slightly different look since the exterior of my house is red brick.Helpful Reply

117135 on Apr 29, 2015I used a quality spray primer followed by a spray paint for mine. It is a south facing door with no storm door and has weathered very well. It is going on its third summer and looking great. It is easy to do and no messy clean up like mentioned above. You will need to prep the door properly before painting with anything. You will need to remove and scrap the peeling paint and clean well before priming and painting.Helpful Reply
