Can me & my Dremel do this?? Lol
My plumber Godblesstheman! told me to cut out the 6 tiles with and around the old holes. Then obviously go back and replace with new tile. (I'm putting in a one handle.)

  • Yes, but a Dremel isn't really needed - score out the grout with a utility knife around the affected tile. Also clean out all the caulk (it all needs to be replaced - when replacing fill up the tub & apply letting it cure before draining) For the tiles - here is hoping they did this right, you can try seeing if the bottom two pieces can be pried off (use a mini flat bar & putty knife - the putty knife is to protect the tub) and gently pry. If that works you are golden & you should be able to pry the others away. If you cant pry them away well you can do what we normally do & smack the tile with a hammer but that is generally only used when we are removing everything. Once you have the tiles off, clean up the left over mortar & wait for the plumber to do his thing. You might want to have him place the single hole at the top of the two tiles so the cuts are easier. You can know try using your Dremel with the appropriate bit to make the cuts or better yet - if your local hardware store can cut tiles on site, mark the tiles & have them cut the corners out. Following the directions - thin set them back in, wait, grout (they do sell tubes of it now), wait, seal, then caulk the whole tub.

Go to the plumbings store and ask about a tub faucet remodel plate that can cover the holes, they make them for just this application. Google it. They cover the holes, no need to mess with the tile. Also, when you take out all of the old caulk wipe everything down with rubbing alcohol that will help kill the mold spoors so it will stay nice longer, also clean your hands really well before applying the caulk. Good luck.

I like @workerbee direction on this one...new tiles would probably not match and the grount would not either just from wear ..good luck!

the remodeling plate will only work if the distance between the valve escutcheon plate and the spout is large enough. Remember, the original three handle valve only had small trim pieces around each handle.

Do contrasting color tile(s) ie: Mexican or 1/2" square mosaic in a design.

you probably can't find a match for the tile, but if you are up up it, you can add contrast with a similar color, or even paint a designer border all around the tub. just have fun with it. I'm on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HandymanServiceofCen...
