Inexpensive way to change modern flat panel white laminate cabinets

I bought a 1900 cape cod home and for reasons that I still don't understand the former owners tried to do a modern update, not cape code modern, but 1980/90's modern. The kitchen cabinets are white flat panel laminate cabinets, plain, boring. Help, what can I do to add some cape cod style without spending a lot of money?
