Paneling solutions?

Question

I am doing a living room makeover. We have removed a woodstove and brick hearth. The wall behind this is all paneling, very much the 70's look. I was told that if I fill the cracks with drywall mud, prime the paneling, then we can have it textured. I have also heard it doesn't always stick. Any ideas if this is a good idea? The paneling is in good shape, so it is possible to just paint it.

I had some walls that were wallpapered over that are paneling underneath and we just did the joint compound over the joints, then textured and painted the walls with great results. Be sure to use a paint and primer in one type of paint.

Find a textured, paintable wallpaper that you like and wallpaper, then paint. It's easy to change colors, and the wallpaper works well to hide the joints in the paneling.

I painted my paneling and it turned out great. I first painted on one coat of a bonding primer that I got at Lowe's, then 2 coats of paint with primer.
