My bathroom has some blue tiles and off white tiles over the bathtub. I would like to paint the blue tiles only.

Yes, you can buy kits. I bought a kit from Home Depot a while back. Maybe they still keep the kits in stock.

I would think that because they are in the bathroom(heat, humidity, etc), it wold be best in the long run to paint them with marine paint. I'm talking marine paint like what is used on boats, ships, etc. regular latex MIGHT stick to the tiles, but I do not think it will last long before it begins to peel & come off... also with the marine paint, it might not be a bad idea to prime it first... prime it, not to seal it, but marine paint will stick better if it has a primer to hold on to.with cars & boats, primer is not only to seal/separate the material from the weather, but also for the paint to stick better, giving you a better looking finish.

Yes, I have painted ceramic bathroom tiles, using "Verathane colors in plastic". Clean the tiles very well, then go for it!! (You could even lightly sand the tiles for extra strong adhesion.)

You bet you can. I painted my blue bath tiles white. Used a sponge brush. They came out beautiful and have lasted many, many years.

There is a special primer available which will help the new paint stick to the tiles.

Yes, there is a special primer available which is made for the purpose of painting ceramic wall tile...we got ours at Lowes. Ours were pink and now they are white....we did it about 10 years ago and it has stayed beautifully.

I painted the blue tiles in my bathroom with a white latex paint and sealed it with clear polyurethane. that was a year ago and it still looks as good as it did when I did it.

Have heard some of the tips before but haven't gotten around to it yet. Basement bath has hideous pink tiles with a raised flower pattern - also hideous.

    Can you paint floor tile?
  • Mehartgallery Mehartgallery on May 06, 2015
Yes, you can.... clean very well with TSP, (or any scouring power cleaner), sand the tiles lightly with sandpaper, then paint with 'high adhesion primer'... it stinks,,, really stinks... and takes overnight to dry... but then you can paint with an oil based paint, such as porch and floor paint that is intended for high traffic areas. It will last for years. (When you are finished, pour some of your paint into a glass bottle with a tight cover, and you will have a 'touch-up kit' at your disposal for any needed cosmetic repairs. (I always keep a small bottle of repair paint in the same room that was painted... empty nail polish bottles make great touch up bottles.. just swish them clean with nail polish remover before filling.)
