Sara: Cooking spray. That's basically what the child & pet-friendly ones in nurseries and home improvement stores are at $8 a can. I usually use a canola oil spray. My friend is a pre-school teacher and this is all they are authorized to use by our county or state law. If they are coming in at a high enough area - i.e. window - I also put a plastic encased ant killer right next to the track so the remaining ones still coming in will, hopefully, take it back to the colony.
  • Bleach. You have to erase their trail. That's why they come back. They leave markers. Try some borax powder outside where u think they are coming in.

This year I used vinegar, cheap lemon juice from a bottle and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. I put it in a spray bottle and add water to fill the neck. In the past I used vinegar daily...I also tried bleach (separately). They never worked more than 1 day. I also use food grade, non toxic diatomaceous earth powder (use a mask) in the outlets and behind appliances.

I've had ants every year since the installers of my new windows screwed up the frame in the kitchen. First few years I watched the ants to see where they were coming in. Then soaked cotton balls with cinnamon oil and stuff it into the cracks. No more ants. This year they took over the kitchen with a vengeance. I put out a paste of borax and sugar in a container lid. Within 24 hours I noticed a big difference. Within 48 hours they were all gone and I haven't seen any since and that was a month ago :)

Try some witch hazel and peppermint oil in some filtered water and put that in a spray bottle. I use about a 1/4 of a teaspoon of each oil per like 10 oz of water.

I recently found ants coming into my house by the back door. Based on advice I had read on hometalk, I sprinkled cinnamon powder across the area, let it sit for a short time and then swept it up. No more ants.
