Repairing wooden legs

I have an old (maybe not antique, but at least 65 years old) rocker that belonged to my in-laws. They raised German Shepherds and one chewed on a couple of the legs. What would be the easiest way to "repair"?

Sanding depending on how badly the legs are chewed... may not be real easy but it's the most effective way. Some deeper gouges left may give it character! :)

If the tooth marks are deep, you will have to use wood filler, sand, and try to match the finish.

Depending on how bad it is small stuff I use Elmer's wood filler. If it is really bad Durham's. It is wonderful.

Yep, agree with above. Get the heavy duty wood filler. It is pretty straight forward from there! Agree with above answers!

I used the wood filler on the legs and rungs of 3 chairs I am re-doing. (Same chewing problem. People are so stupid to let their pets do that.) It worked great, but it won't hold a stain. I don't know if there is another brand that will, but I was really disappointed in it. I finally just primed the legs with ZInzer 1-2-3 and am going to paint them. So ask the man at the hardware store about the type of filler if you plan to stain.

@Shirley Kalinosky My mother had a friend over with her new puppy. Before my mother noticed, that dumb puppy had gnawed on the rungs of one of her chairs. The puppy then went out into my mother's fenced backyard, but the damage had been done. It isn't always the furniture owner's fault, sometimes it isn't even completely the pet owner's fault. I think that dog was just stupid. She did stop chewing everything in sight, but she never took to any of the training that she was given, they even flunked her out of an out of home dog training class she was sent to. The owner had wanted another dog to act as her hearing dog, back just when that was getting started, she had other dogs before her that figured it out by themselves. This dog barked at the door bell, but then again, she barked at leaves falling from the trees!

wish there were pictures, but I have used sawdust and glue to fill similar chew marks. I have also used crayons or 'filler sticks' which are basically the same thing.. Hope this helps..

Thank all of you for your suggestions. I am going to paint the chair so any wood filler will work I guess. ruslzplace-I didn't think about filler sticks but I think I'll try it.
