I received a Clematis "Ville De Lyon" for Mother's Day

Grady on May 11, 2015I believe it is OK to put it in a large pot. I'm no plant expert, but I'm guessing it's OK to do that. As far as winter, how cold does it get out there? How much snow does it get?Helpful Reply

Barbara Ward on May 11, 2015Clematis are ''touchy'' plants... Once established, 'roots shaded' from direct sunlight, they are good to go. Like Iowa, Michigan winters are nasty, bitter., you would have to take the potted plant indoors (garage) .... This is only My opinion ... Good Luck !!Helpful Reply

Mikell Paulson on May 11, 2015Yup! It will do fine in a big pot! Cover the base of the plant with a large flat rock or brick, as they love there top in the sun roots in the shade. Yes it will need to go inside for the winter! Good luck! One of my favorites!Helpful Reply

Ms. M on May 12, 2015I agree clematis can be touchy! BUT if you keep them watered and protect them during fall and winter! My Mom was given a clematis with a horrible looking stem. It was brown hard and split down one side of it. It's in its own pot. For the first two years it grew a little bit and we got a flower or two. This year it has about 8 stems coming putt of the ground and its growing like crazy!! It's been worth the wait! It's also on the north side of our house that's part shade. Hope yours makes it! Just have some patience and it will pay off!! :-DHelpful Reply

Barb Hynes on May 12, 2015thanks for your advice. I am planning to put it right in the ground because I don't really want top move a pot full of dirt to the garage in the fall. I will need to remove a holly bush (not doing well anyway) to make room for the clematis and trellis. thanks againHelpful Reply

Linda on May 13, 2015Remember, clematis, no matter what kind, like to keep their toes covered as a rule of thumb. The first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the third year they leap!Helpful Reply
