I have a couple old coffee sacks and love to make a throw rug for the kitchen. Yet would like to soften them for it easier on the feet. ( little slivers) Can I coat it with something?

Have you tried boiling them? Of course, that might stretch them all out of shape, or even shrink them....

Are they cotton or burlap? Either 1 can be washed in the washer. The cotton will shrink a little. I used to make hooked rugs with burlap. They make a real mess in the washer the first couple of times you wash them, after that, they're fine.

Not sure. You might try lightly dampening the sack, put a dryer sheet in with it and turn dryer on for just a few minutes. Good luck! Hope it works for you.

Wash them in warm or cool water with a good amount of white cleaning vinegar included. Dry in the dryer and the burlap will often. There will likely be a large amount of debris left in your washer and dryer but it will definitely soften up the harshness of the burlap.

Maybe soak in a fabric softener?

  • Let them soak in a sink full of water and liquid fabric softener for the entire night. Rinse well and place in the dryer with dryer sheets. Needs to smell nice and be soft!

Let the fabric softener do the work, if it is smelly (typical burlap smell) wash in vinegar and then use liquid fabric softener. Dry flat to keep it's shape.
